Saving a good and healthy natural tooth is most often the first choice of treatment. When there is an infection, cyst, bone defect, or a diseased tooth, an apicoectomy may be able to save the tooth. The procedure, usually done in concert with a root canal, involves opening the gum tissue for the surgeon to see the bone and to remove the diseased tissue. Normally the end of the tooth root is also removed.
